In 2008 alone, Kenya spent a massive 27 billion shillings to buy combat aircraft, helicopters, grenade launchers and other light arms. More has been spent in other years in programmes supported by China, the United States and other nations.

Kenyan fighter jets have attacked two bases belonging to Islamist al Shabaab insurgents in Somalia and killed at least 80 militants, African Union peacekeepers there said on Monday. Al Shabaab rebels denied any of its fighters had been killed. The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), whose soldiers launched a new offensive against al Shabaab this year, said Kenyan planes carried out the raids on Anole and Kuday in the southern Lower Jubba region. It did not say when they took place. "The air strikes in Anole left more than 30 al Shabaab fighters dead, three technical vehicles and one Land Cruiser loaded with ammunition destroyed," AMISOM said. More than 50 rebels were killed in the Kuday raid, it added. Responding to the AMISOM statement, al Shabaab's spokesman for military operations Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab told Reuters the group did not have any bases in the area of the raids, which it said took place on Thursday. "Only pastoralists were around there and luckily no goat was injured, let alone a civilian," he said. Kenya first sent its troops into neighbouring Somalia in 2011 after several attacks inside its territory that it blamed on al Shabaab, and later joined the peacekeeping force. The militants have since carried out a string of assaults to punish Kenya for its intervention. Al Shabaab fighters killed at least 67 people in a raid on a Nairobi shopping mall last year. AMISOM said al Shabaab had lost control of more than 10 major towns in the new push by African troops, including soldiers from Uganda, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Burundi and Sierra Leone.

PRESS RELEASE April 4, 2014, 12:40 p.m. EDT Boeing Delivers First 787 Dreamliner to Kenya Airways EVERETT, Wash., April 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Kenya Airways celebrated the delivery and flyaway today of the Kenyan flag carrier's first 787 Dreamliner. The airplane departed Paine Field in Everett for a 7,800 nautical mile (14,456 km) nonstop flight to Kenya Airways' home base in Nairobi at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The 787 will form the backbone of the airline's future long-haul fleet, providing greater range, improved efficiencies and outstanding passenger comfort. "The delivery of our first ever 787 Dreamliner not only opens a new chapter for our airline, but also for Kenya," said Dr. Titus Naikuni, chief executive officer, Kenya Airways. "The 787 will enable Kenya Airways to explore new markets, improve its economic performance, provide passengers with revolutionary comfort, while continuing to contribute towards the sustainable development of Africa." The 787 is the world's most technologically advanced airplane with composite materials making up 50 percent of the primary structure by weight, including the fuselage and wing. In addition to bringing big-jet ranges to midsize airplanes, the 787 will provide Kenya Airways with unmatched fuel efficiency, using 20 percent less fuel than today's similarly sized airplanes "The 787 provides carriers with the flexibility to expand their networks and reduce operating costs, while offering passengers an unsurpassed in-flight experience," said Van Rex Gallard, vice president of sales for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 787 will be an outstanding addition to Kenya Airways' fleet, providing the cornerstone of the airline's future success and enabling it to continue its mission to connect Africa to the world, and the world to Africa." Passengers traveling on Kenya Airways' 787 will experience the passenger-pleasing features of the Dreamliner such as larger, electronically-dimmable windows and larger overhead luggage bins. During flight the 787 is pressurized to a lower cabin altitude, has higher humidity levels, advanced air filtration and smoother-ride technology to make the flying experience more comfortable and allow passengers to arrive at their destination more refreshed. This delivery is the first of 787 Dreaminers set to join Kenya Airways' fleet. The deliveries of additional 787s, along with 777-300ER (Extended Range) airplanes, forms part of the East African carrier's 10-year strategic plan called "Project Mawingu." The plan is focused on increasing the airline's fleet size from 44 airplanes to 107 by 2021 and destinations from the 62 to 115. Currently the Nairobi-based carrier operates an all-Boeing long-haul fleet of six 767-300ERs, four 777-200ERs and one 777-300ER. Kenya Airways' first 787 is scheduled to begin flying regionally within Africa in the coming weeks, before beginning long-haul service to Paris in early June. Currently the "Pride of Africa" serves destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. To date, more than 130 Dreamliners have been delivered to 17 customers worldwide. Great video of US Air Force F-15 aircraft taking off from Royal air force base. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. ARLINGTON, Va. - The Air National Guard will unveil an upgrade to the radar system for its F-15 Eagle fighter aircraft today, which will give it greater capabilities while reducing maintenance costs. The new radar system—the APG-63(v)3 Active Electronically Scanned Array—replaces the older mechanically controlled devices currently in the aircraft. "When the F-15 was first designed and made, the radar in it was world class, the best at the time, but its 1970s technology," said Air Force Maj. Dave Slaydon, chief of F-15 requirements for the Air National Guard. "It's a mechanically scanned array, meaning it's a radar dish like you would see in the movies and it has hydraulics that move it back and forth to point around the sky to find the bad guys." The new radar system does away with the hydraulics system completely. "With this new technology it is a flat panel with a bunch of little panels on it and you can electronically steer the radar beam around," said Slaydon. A radar controlled electronically, rather than mechanically, has a number of benefits, including less maintenance on the equipment. "Since there are no moving parts to it, it hardly ever breaks," said Slaydon. "There aren't any hydraulics or mechanical parts banging around. That gives it a really, really high reliability rate which is good for us as it means the jet is [available] more often to fly as there are less maintenance actions required on it." But, said Slaydon, the big plus is the improved capabilities of the radar unit. "The performance part is where we really make the money," said Slaydon. "With that technology of the radar being electronically controlled, the beam can be pointed all around the sky in fractions of a second." That translates to a greater situational awareness, said Slaydon. "What that allows you to do is to track multiple targets and be able to engage multiple targets," he said. "It also gives you a greater detection range, so you can find the bad guys at a further range and it has increased identification capabilities as well where the radar can scan the radar signature and tell if it's a Boeing 747 or is it a fighter-type of jet." Development of the improved F-15 radar system has been ongoing for about the past five years, said Slaydon, adding that it has been an Air National Guard-led program from the beginning. "We have partnered with the active duty Air Force, and they have taken a huge role in the program," he said. "But it was conceived by, developed by and we're fielding it first in the Air National Guard so that's a big feather in our cap." The radar will be fielded by the 125th Fighter Wing, based in Jacksonville, Fla., said Slaydon. Units in the Oregon and Louisiana Air National Guard will be the next to get the radar sets. Fielding in Florida and Oregon is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010, and Louisiana is scheduled to receive the upgrades in the early part of 2011. "We're spreading out the initial beddown to put the capability where it's needed geographically," Slaydon said. "After that initial issue, we'll then go in a fill in with a few more as needed." He added that future sites may include Massachusetts and Montana. Although the new radar units are specifically for the F-15, the technology translates to other fighter platforms as well, said Slaydon, adding that it has been incorporated into the F-22 Raptor. The fielding of the equipment speaks to the capabilities of the Air Guard. "It just shows that the Air National Guard is committed to air dominance," said Slaydon. "That applies to both our homeland defense mission as well as our worldwide capabilities that we bring air dominance to the combatant commanders worldwide. That includes modernizing our jets to bring the capabilities to what the mission requires." Video Description Credit: Sgt. 1st Class Jon Soucy Video Credits: Airman 1st Class Emma Duff, Master Sgt. Team Kenya arrived this afternoon from the World Relay Championships in the Bahamas where it finished sixth overall. The squad arrived just 24 hours before the competition started after being reportedly stranded in New York due to a booking mix-up. The team only managed one silver medal in the men's 4x800m to collect 16 points in total. Solidifying their position as the strongest relay nation in the world, the USA collected their third successive Golden Baton honour in Bahamas. It was one of the largest displays of military might since Kenya became a republic. The armed forces staged a show of strength as the country ushered in a new constitutional order. This was the first glimpse the world has seen of the results of an ongoing military modernisation programme. In 2008 alone, Kenya spent a massive 27 billion shillings to buy combat aircraft, helicopters, grenade launchers and other light arms. More has been spent in other years in programmes supported by China, the United States and other nations.
